ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nick Zuiderveld (pronounced zider-veld) is a Colorado-based watercolorist who balances a professional career in the agribanking industry with a relentless pursuit of the "magical" qualities of water media. While he has possessed a natural inclination toward sketching since childhood, his creative journey reached a turning point during a summer break with his two sons. What began as an effort to encourage his children to use old watercolor pans sparked a personal revelation as he painted a scene and realized the creative potential the medium held; the luminosity and spontaneity of watercolor offered a creative language that years of sporadic sketching had never quite reached.

 

Primarily self-taught, Nick has refined his craft by learning from notable Colorado artists such as Dan Marshall and Dennis Pendleton. His work is a study in light and atmosphere, moving away from early interests in rigid realism toward the expressive, flowing nature of pigment. As a member of the Colorado Watercolor Society, Nick views his art as a necessary counterpoint to his professional life—a way to connect with nature and capture the immediacy of a moment in time.

 

Residing in Colorado with his wife and two boys, Nick is constantly carving out time between family life and his career to explore new avenues in his art. Whether working en plein air or in the studio, he is driven by the medium’s unique ability to convey mood with minimal equipment and maximum impact. For Nick, every painting is an evolution, seeking to translate the world around him into vibrant, luminous works that celebrate the joy of discovery.
